Bloomfield Parents Vote To Extend School Days To Make Up Snow Days

Last updated on Tuesday, February 25, 2014

(BLOOMFIELD) - In an online poll, Bloomfield parents voted to extend the school day to makeup time off for snow days.

The school system has missed seven full days due to cancellations and must make up five days. Parents voted to add one hour onto 13 days in March, rather than attend classes on one Saturday in March and one Saturday in April.

Superintendent Dan Sichting agreed with parents and would prefer the added instructional time be added to the end of the day for efficiency reasons.

Sichting says that historically, Saturday attendance has been lower in terms of percentages. Additionally, heat and electricity is reduced on weekends for cost savings. Going to school on Saturday would increase those costs. Divorced families tend to use weekends for visitations for the non-custodial parents. Other families use Saturday and Sunday for family days. This reduces the time for families. Although some working parents indicated they might enjoy a quiet day on a Saturday when kids were attending school.

Sichting says he will present the survey results to the school board at their Thursday meeting.

The plan would be to add 60 minutes to the school day from March 3 to March 19 or to hold Saturday school on March 15 and April 12.
