Volunteers Needed For Men's Warming Center

Last updated on Monday, January 20, 2014

(BEDFORD) - The Bedford and Mitchell Ministerial Association is looking for volunteers who can work the overnight hours at their warming center for men which is planning to open on January 26.

The sub-zero temperatures Indiana experienced earlier this month has highlighted the need for a warming center in the community.

Salvation Army Capt. Donna Rose, says about 80 people have signed up to volunteer at the warming center but they are not able to work the overnight hours. Rose says at least two men are needed to staff the overnight hours for safety reasons and if volunteers don't come forward the shelter will not open.

The shelter will allow include an evening meal and breakfast and a place to sleep and shower. The group is working with Bertha's Mission, a community kitchen, to provide meals for the warming center. The center will only be open from January to March and would not provide daytime services

Rose says it will keep men from sleeping in their cars or the woods.

In addition to volunteers, Rose says financial support is needed for the project. To volunteer or donate, contact Rose at 275-5429 or 583-3965, or the Rev. Rick Eldred at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 275-6539.
