Three Deaths Linked To Flu

(UNDATED) - State health officials are reporting the first flu deaths of the 2013-2014 flu season - three deaths have been reported so far.

State Health Commissioner Dr. William VanNess says influenza is now widespread across Indiana.

VanNess encourages all Hoosiers to become vaccinated from flu to protect themselves, their families and the community. The Centers for Disease Control report Indiana is one of eight states showing "moderate" rates of flulike illness., as the nation heads into the peak of flu season. About half the states, including Indiana are reporting regional outbreaks.

Although the flu season doesn't typically begin until January, a handful of people in the county already have been infected by the virus in the past couple of weeks. Flu is an illness caused by flu viruses that infect the respiratory tract and can include many symptoms such as fever, body aches and coughing.
