(BEDFORD) - Schools were closed Monday, but they could get an excused absence.
Indiana State School Superintendent Glenda Ritz say school corporations can apply for a waiver, meaning students would not have to make up the time they missed.
Ritz says, schools must offer 180 days of classes, and, unless a waiver is granted, they must make up days they miss because of bad weather.
"Indiana statute provides for the department to grant waivers of the 180-day requirement in these exceptional circumstances," Ritz said in a statement issued Sunday night. "The department has determined that weather forecasts indicate that conditions will be extremely dangerous for most Indiana students. School corporations that choose to close on Jan. 6, 2014, may therefore apply for a waiver for that day through the normal process."
North Lawrence Schools Superintendent Gary Conner says, the corporation will apply for that waiver.
