(UNDATED) - Daviess-Martin County REMC is offering two unique programs geared toward the youth of the community.

High school students in the Daviess-Martin County REMC service territory are invited to apply to participation in this year's Electric Cooperative Youth Tour to Washington, D.C., and sixth graders are encouraged to apply for participation in the eleventh annual Touchstone Energy Camp.

Join Indiana Youth In Washington D.C.

High school juniors have a chance to join other Indiana youth on a trip of a lifetime. Applications are now available for the 2014 Electric Cooperative Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. The trip begins on June 12 in Indianapolis and ends on June 21.

According to Ken Frye, general manager of Daviess-Martin County REMC, the Indiana delegation will be approximately 75 students from throughout the state, each selected by a local Touchstone Energy cooperative. They will join over a thousand other high school juniors from across the nation.

"Daviess-Martin County REMC is pleased to be able to provide this opportunity for local students," Frye said. "It's a great trip and a wonderful chance to see the sights, make new friends and learn how everyone, even young people, can make a difference in the world."

The Indiana delegation will meet in Indianapolis on June 12 to tour the Indiana Statehouse and attend a get acquainted dinner with fellow Youth Tour delegates.

As they head east, students and chaperones will make a stop at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pa., on their way to Gettysburg where they will visit the battlefield and museum. Then on to Washington, D.C., to begin a full schedule of sight-seeing, visits to Arlington National Cemetery, the Smithsonian museums on the National Mall and tours of the National Memorials. Students will also have an opportunity to compete for a $1,000 scholarship and the Youth Leadership Council.

Over 1,500 students -- representing 44 states -- will participate in the "Youth Tour Rally" on Monday morning where they will share their thoughts and opinions on a variety of timely issues. This will prepare them for a busy Tuesday on Capitol Hill, when students visit with representatives of Indiana's Congressional delegation. Leadership lessons will be intertwined with the itinerary throughout the week.

Indiana's electric cooperatives have hosted the Youth Tour since 1960, providing hundreds of young Hoosiers the opportunity to visit our nation's capital and learn about the federal government and the cooperative utility industry.

Touchstone Energy Camp

The Touchstone Energy Camp will be held June 4-7 at Camp Tecumseh in Brookston.

The experience was designed to educate sixth grade students across rural Indiana about electrification and electric safety, and help them to understand the cooperative business principle. A wide variety of activities have been designed to enhance this summer camp opportunity and create a memorable educational experience.

"Students will benefit from participation in a fun and powerful program," said Janet Chestnut, Daviess-Martin County REMC manager of communications/member relations.

"Topics ranging from environmental education to electrification will be supplemented by traditional summer camp activities like swimming and horseback riding. This is truly a unique opportunity."

One student whose parents are members of Daviess-Martin County REMC will be chosen to participate in the Youth Tour and two students will be chosen for Touchstone Energy Camp.

Applications for both programs are available at area schools and the REMC office. Deadlines to submit an application are Feb. 14 for both the Youth Tour and Touchstone Energy Camp. For more information contact Janet Chestnut at 800-762-7362 or visit the website at www.dmremc.com.
