Orleans Man Injured After Crashing Vehicle

(MITCHELL) - An Orleans man was flown to an Indianapolis Hospital after he crashed his vehicle on U.S. 60 East, about a mile east of Spring Mill State Park, Monday night.

According to a Lawrence County Police report, 21-year-old Sawyer Shelton was traveling west on U.S. 60 West at a high-rate of speed just before he crashed the 2004 Cadillac CTS he was driving at 9:24 p.m.

According to several other motorists, Shelton passed at least three vehicles traveling at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour.

Police say Shelton lost control of the car, went of the north side of U.S. 60 and traveled 104 feet before hitting a driveway culvert. The vehicle then went airborne for 185 feet, then landed and flipped over onto the roof and slid 74 feet and then began to roll several times before landing in the middle of the of road in an upright position.

Police say from the time the car left the roadway until it stopped it had traveled more than 477 feet.

Shelton was alert when police arrived on the scene and told police that he was driving too fast and was sleepy and must of fallen asleep. When he woke he had crashed and was able to crawl out of the vehicle.

Shelton who complained of pain to his entire body, told emergency workers he was suffering severe pain to his head, neck and pelvic area. He was taken to St. Vincent Dunn Hospital and then flown by Air Evac helicopter to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

Assisting at the scene were several officer from Lawrence County, a Seals ambulance crew and Marion Volunteer Fire Department first responders.
