Odon-Cannelburg Road Now Has 10-Ton Load Limit

Last updated on Thursday, January 16, 2014

(DAVIESS CO.) - The Daviess County Commissioners voted to put a 10-ton load limit on a portion of County Road 900 East, also known as the Odon-Cannelburg Road.

The Washington Times-Herald reports that commissioners have placed the limit on an unfinished section of the revamped road between County Road 450 North and County Road 500 North.

According to Highway Superintendent Phil Cornelius, the limit was placed after contractors repairing the road says they are seeing damage from large trucks and through traffic.

The county is in the midst of a multi-million dollar upgrade of the roadway to widen it and add buggy lanes, and additional shoulders in an attempt to make it safer. Most of the construction shut down for the winter and the road is currently closed, except for those people who live along that section or those who have business there.

Commissioners are worried that the recent wet weather combined with freezing and thawing has added to worries about how the road will hold up until crews can get back in and finish the work. Motorist have moved barricades to travel on the closed road and because of that the Sheriff's Department will increase patrols in the area.

The county has made a formal presentation to the state for $11.6 million to complete the Odon-Cannelburg Road project to CR 1250N. The state is expected to score the county's request and forward it to Indianapolis for further review with a final answer expected by the end of the month.
