(BLOOMINGTON) - The man convicted of murdering Adam Sarnecki in a Bloomington Pizza X parking lot was sentenced 73 years in prison in November 2013.
A 12-person jury found 23-year-old James Finney guilty of murdering Sarnecki in November 2011 and two felony counts of carrying a handgun without a permit.
Finney was sentenced to two eight-year sentences for the other two felony charges for his possession of a handgun. He would serve the two eight-year sentences concurrently, following the 65-year sentencing, resulting in a total sentence of 73 years.
22-year-old Sarnecki was killed after he caught Finney breaking into another employee's vehicle.
Prosecuting attorneys argued Finney shot Sarnecki, who was unarmed and the act was unprovoked.
But defense attorneys say Sarnecki chased Finney after he found Finney breaking into a car. They say that indicates Finney was acting out in self-defense.
Finney plans to appeal the sentencing. He has been appointed a public defender.
