(DAVIESS CO.) - A head on collision this morning in Daviess County left five people injured and one driver behind bars.
The accident happened at 8:30 a.m. on U.S. 50.
According to Indiana State Police Trooper Jarrod Lents, 32-year-old Hsa Moo Thaw, of Washington, was traveling east on US Highway 50 in a 1999 Toyota four-door.
He was apporching County Road 1200 East, when Thaw decided to pass a tractor-trailer in his lane.
Due to the slick road conditions and Thaw was traveling at an unsafe speed, he lost control of the Toyota and slid, head on, into a 1996 Ford F-150, driven by 44-year-old John E. McPherson, of Shoals.
McPherson had to be freed from the wreckage.
He was airlifted from the scene and taken to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. He is listed in critical condition after suffering a fractured pelvis, broken right femur and a broken nose.
Four occupants in the Toyota were injured, sustaining injuries ranging from a broken back to abdominal abrasions.
42-year-old Hsee Wawah, of Indianapolis, a front seat passenger in the Toyota suffered a broken back.
7 -year-old Me Me Titaray, of Indianapolis, a rear seat passenger in the Toyota suffered a broken shoulder and clavicle
4-year-old Hser Eh Thaw and 10-year-old Hsa Blut Soe, both of Washington, and rear seat passengers in the Toyota both suffered abdominal abrasions.
Trooper Lents determined that Thaw was driving while intoxicated. He had a blood alcohol content of .21 percent and was arrested and taken to the Daviess County Security Center. Thaw was not injured in the crash.
Thaw is facing three felony charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious injury, three counts of owi with minor passengers in the vehicle, two counts of neglect of a dependent, three counts of driving while suspended with prior convictions causing serious injury and a misdemeanor counts of reckless driving.
