(BEDFORD) - Lawrence County Commissioners Tuesday morning voted to approve Parker Group’s 2014 insurance renewal proposal for the county.
Bob Bridg, of the Times-Mail reports that Miles Parker, representing Parker Group, explained the new contract reflected a hike of 3.5 percent over last year. The premium of $394,232 was up $13,371 over the 2013 pact.
Parker explained property limits had increased $4.89 million and the county was facing a slight hike in workers compensation payroll estimates. What's driving most of the increase is the auto loss experience. The county has a four-year loss ratio of 225 percent.
Parker offered a few cost-saving measures, but noted they would precipitate a change in coverage.
In other busniess:
* Lawrence County Veterans Service Officer Brad Bough received authority from the commissioners to enlist Mitchell High School's Aubrey Foddrill as an intern in his department beginning this month.
Bough thanked the commissioners for the county's support. He has been authorized to open the office four days a week.
* David Holmes, highway superintendent, said recent high waters had forced his crews to close several county roadways. Crews have been out clearing debris now that the water is receding and cold-patching some holes created by recent ice and snow removal.
Crews have also been cutting brush along roadways and hauling loads of sand from Brownstown to restock county supplies.
* Sheriff Sam Craig reported there were 136 prisoners incarcerated at the jail, including 10 women and 17 Department of Correction inmates.
He also informed the commissioners new security measures would be in place at the courthouse beginning Jan. 2.
Craig says the public will access the courthouse from the south entryway while work on the courthouse and the north end will be secured. He noted that arrangement would change at a later date and the public would eventually enter from the north.
Craig cautioned courthouse visitors to leave pocketknives and any items that could raise a rag flag for security personnel at home or in their vehicles.
* The commissioners continue to contemplate whether to use a ramp or a lift to provide access to the courthouse for those with disabilities.
