(SALEM) - The Salem Police Department is warning businesses about counterfeit $20 bills being passed.
Police say three counterfeit bills were reported at two Salem businesses.
Police say the bills as being high quality look-alikes.
Clerks used the special ink pens to determine if the bills were counterfeit and they passed. Detective Scott Ratts says those pens help detect counterfeits, but businesses should not rely on them. The pens only indicate whether the bill was printed on the wrong kind of paper, but they won't detect more sophisticated fakes.
Ratts contacted the U.S. Secret Service and has forwarded them the bills to be examined. Ratts is urging businesses to contact the Salem Police Department if they have collected any bills that might be suspicious.
