(BEDFORD) - It’s not all coffee and pastries for local business owner Laura Anderson of Stone Cutters Cafe & Roastery. Recently Anderson, prompted by Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann and Mayor Shawna Girgis, applied for and was one of only 20 women accepted into the 2013-2014 class of the Richard G. Lugar Excellence in Public Service Series.
"It is a huge honor. To be among these amazingly strong and confident women is really incredible," Anderson said.
A Butler University graduate with a degree in Political Science, Anderson is originally from Porter County, Indiana. She moved to Bedford upon marrying her husband, Bedford pharmacist Joshua Anderson. She will be representing Lawrence County during the series.
"I am thrilled to be counted among the inspiring women of Lawrence and Porter Counties that are now alumni of the Lugar Series," Anderson added.
Lawrence County graduates include Janie Craig Chenault, Andrea McCord, Beth Snead, Michelle Woodward and Marla Jones. Porter County alumni are Nancy Adams, Dot Nuechterlein, Judith Root Stiles and Beth Wrobel.
Anderson will attend day-long classes once a month for eight months and finish with a three day seminar in Washington, D.C. The classes are led by highly esteemed Republicans and business women and men from around the country. Participants are educated and motivated to open themselves up to public service.
"I'm not entirely sure I'd ever personally want to run for office, but I have a passion for service, and if I can make a difference in my community in any way, shape or form I'm all in," says Anderson. "I feel that people are currently disillusioned and frustrated with politics right now. There is too much black and white on both sides. The only way to get heard and considered is to offer the same respect to those of differing opinions. This is true in all aspects of life, not just politics."
About the Richard G. Lugar Excellence in Public Service Series
The Richard G. Lugar Excellence in Public Service Series was founded in 1990 as a women's leadership development program designed to increase the number of Republican women in local, state and national elective and appointive offices. Inspired by former Indiana Senator Richard G. Lugar, the program has trained 421 Hoosier women in 23 classes to enter public service. The Lugar Series led to the creation of a national series of programs which have trained more than 2,000 women from across the nation.
The Richard G. Lugar Excellence in Public Service Series is a not-for profit organization funded and operated by the voluntary contributions of individuals and organizations.
