BNL High School Basketball Teams To RED OUT Heart Disease

Last updated on Monday, January 27, 2014

(BEDFORD) - Bedford North Lawrence High School will support the American Heart Association with two “RED OUTS” in February, which is American Heart Month.

The first RED OUT is Feb. 4 when the girls basketball team hosts Bloomington South. The second RED OUT is Feb. 7 when the boys basketball team hosts Floyd Central.

Students and fans are encouraged to participate in the RED OUTs by wearing red "GET FIRED UP" t-shirts, which are available for a $10 donation to the American Heart Association. The shirts will be available at the high school throughout Heart Week leading up to the games and at the games.

The RED OUT is a community outreach program of the BNL Stars, athletes who will be raising donations all week at school with several activities and getting the message out on a heart healthy lifestyle.

All money raised by the "RED OUT" will support the American Heart Association's mission of building healthier lives free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke in Lawrence County where 37.2 percent of all deaths are due to cardiovascular diseases. Nationwide, heart disease is the No. 1 killer of Americans, responsible for one in three deaths. And, congenital heart defects are one of the leading causes of death in children under age 1.

In addition to providing community education programs throughout Indiana, the American Heart Association has funded more than $7.4 million of heart research at universities in Indiana over the last five years.
