Bedford Man Taken To Hospital After House Fire

Last updated on Monday, January 13, 2014

(BEDFORD) - Firefighters from the Bedford Fire Department extinguished a basement fire at 2951 Broadview Drive Sunday night.

The owner, Justin Tuell was taken to a local hospital after suffering smoke inhalation.

"He was out of the house when firefighters arrived," says Bedford Fire Chief Jon Wagner. "He was bent over and coughing. An ambulance crew treated him at the scene and then transported him to the hospital for treatment."

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze that started in the laundry room in the basement of the home just before 9:46 p.m.

"Investigator David Wright will be on the scene this morning to investigate the cause," Wagner says. "The homeowner was doing laundry when the fire started, but we will know more once David concludes his investigation."

The fire melted a plastic water line and firefighter had to call the water department to come out and turn off the water.

"Sometimes we get lucky and the water from the melted water pipe will help snuff out the fire," Wagner says. "But that didn't happen in this case."

Firefighters also had to pull the electric meter.

"The electric company sent out an employee to cap off the meter," Wagner says. "The gas was also shut off at the home."

Firefighters then ventilated the home.

"Firefighters helped the family retrieve several items from the home and take them to a family members home that lived nearby," Wagner says. "They also removed some of the burnt clothing from the basement."
