UPDATED - Bedford Firefighters Battle House Fire In Edgewood Addition

Last updated on Wednesday, January 29, 2014

(BEDFORD) - Bedford Fire Department firefighters battled a house fire at 215 Westwood Drive in Edgewood Addition this morning.

The home of Crystal Rayhill was engulfed in flames. The house is owned by Damion Bailey.

According to her neighbor Peter Borodach, officers banged on his door at 5 a.m. this morning asking him and his family to evacuate their home.

"They woke us up and said we needed to leave," Borodach says.

His wife Elizabeth, who is the art teacher at Oolitic, and their 7-year-old grandson Ashton fled the home.

"They wanted us to move our vehicles," Borodach says. "It looked like the fire started in the back section of the home on the north end. There is a shed that was fully engulfed in flames and she parks her car back there. I am not sure what started on fire first, the shed, car or house."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

According to Bedford Fire Battalion Chief John Dixon, firefighters had the blaze under control in about 45 minutes.

Rayhill, who is pregnant, was taken to IU Health Hospital after she experienced trouble breathing. She was treated and released and is staying with her mother, for now.

One firefighter injured his knee after he slipped on the ice covered area.

Another problem firefighters faced this morning was a small magnesium explosion. Magnesium explosions are normally associated with lawnmowers or cars. No one was hurt during the explosion.

The explosion damaged some firefighters' Kevlar gear, but Dixon added he didn't know how much of the gear was damaged.
