(BLOOMINGTON) - John Whikehart has been named City of Bloomington Deputy Mayor by Mayor Mark Kruzan.
"I've been incredibly fortunate to now have served with three good friends as Deputy Mayor," Kruzan said. "John and I share governmental and political philosophies, management styles, and a commitment to the notion that public service is a noble profession. He will maintain the City's tradition of Deputy Mayors with the intellect, desire, and sense of humor that makes them the kind of people with whom others want to work."
"This is an incredible offer to make a continued contribution to the city that is our home and which my family loves," Whikehart said. "I am very grateful to Mayor Kruzan for this opportunity to serve, and I look forward to working in a new way with the many people in his administration whom I have come to know through our collaborations throughout the years."
Whikehart recently retired as Chancellor of the Ivy Tech Community College after 12 years. He previously was Ivy Tech Executive Director for Administration for 10 years, and Director of Staff for Indiana Senate Democratic Leader Frank O'Bannon beginning in 1988. Whikehart also has extensive experience in local government and community development having been City of Kokomo Director of Personnel from 1980-88 and Director of Comprehensive Employment Training Act Program based in Monroe County from 1975-80. He began his career as a teacher in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and Lawrence Township in the Marion County school system from 1970-75.
He received his undergraduate degree at Indiana University-Bloomington, Graduate Certificate in Public Management at the IU School of Public & Environmental Affairs, and Master of Arts in Political Science at Ball State.
"The City of Bloomington greatly benefitted from John's leadership at Ivy Tech," Kruzan said, "and I couldn't be more pleased that it will continue to do so with Deputy Mayor Whikehart."
Whikehart will take office January 16. He succeeds former Deputy Mayor Maria Heslin who returned to the private sector earlier this year.
