(MITCHELL) - Two people were injured after the driver possibly fell asleep and the vehicle they were in left the roadway Wednesday at 5:51 p.m.

According to a Lawrence County Police report, 77-year-old Stanley Hicks, of Monrovia, was traveling north on Ind. 37 near the Holiday Drive-In when his wife says he fell asleep and the vehicle left the roadway.

The couple's 2005 Chrysler Town & Country went around the curve and then off the east side of the road. The vehicle went down the embankment and drove along the ditch and then hit an embankment went up over that embankment crossed a private driveway and then hit a second embankment causing the vehicle to go airborne. The vehicle landed and then traveled up the embankment and stopped in the yard of Mike Pugh at 1212 Ind. 37.

Two Seals ambulances, the Marion Volunteer Fire Department and the Bedford Fire Department extrication unit were alerted.

Bedford Fire Department officials were then called away from the crash site because Marion firefighters were able to free the couple from the vehicle.

Stanley suffered chest, abdomen and back injuries. Health officials believed he was suffering from abdominal bleeding and he was rushed to St. Vincent Dunn Hospital and then flown by helicopter to the University of Louisville Hospital.

His passenger, 64-year-old Vickie Hicks, suffered two broken arms and a broken lower leg. She was taken to St. Vincent Dunn Hospital for treatment.

Because Stanley Hicks was flown to an out of state hospital, police were not able to check to see if he had been drinking. However medical personnel reported Mr. Hicks did not have an odor of alcohol.

Stanley was wearing a seat belt during the accident, however Vickie was not.
