(SALEM) - A Salem family has lost their home, their possessions and three of their dogs in a fire.
The Leader-Democrat reports that the cause of the blaze at 604 N. Shelby Street is still under investigation. Salem Fire Department Chief Tom Day says the fire could be listed as undetermined because of the severity of the damage.
Norma Smith was home with the youngest of her three children, an 18-month-old little girl and was lying down with her daughter when she awoke to the odor of smoke.
She opened a door from a room in the back of the house and encountered thick black smoke. She then called her daughter, who called 911.
Smith and the baby escaped unharmed through a side window.
Day says the fire started in the living room. When firefighters arrived flames were shooting from the porch, windows and roof.
Day says there was heavy fire damage in the living room area and front portion of the home and water damage and heavy heavy smoke damage throughout the home.
Day was unsure if the family will be able to save anything.
The Red Cross arrived on the scene and is putting the family up in a hotel for three nights.
The family also includes dad Roger Smith, the older daughter and a 17-year-old son. Day said the Fraternal Order of Police plans to help the family.
