(ODON) - The Indiana Department of Environmental Management says the Town of Odon is facing fines of up to $500 per day for discharging raw sewage into an area creek.

According to the Odon Journal, during heavy rains, the Odon has been diverting raw sewage into a small waterway that feeds into Smothers Creek and Kane Ditch. According to officials this has been standard practice because the town doesn't have any other options.

But now, IDEM has issued Odon an order to fix the problem. A comprehensive plan addressing the issues with Odon's aging sewer system must be filed by a January 11, or the town will face fines of up to $500 per day.

Midwest Engineers has estimated the cost of fixing the aging waste water system would cost more than $4 million.

Odon Town Board members meet on Monday and approved an agreement with Triad Associates from Indianapolis to work with IDEM and request an extension of the deadline.
