Mitchell Hires Firm To Update Wastewater Treatment Plant

Last updated on Thursday, December 12, 2013

(MITCHELL) - The city of Mitchell hired an engineering firm Tuesday to take the lead on updating the city’s aging wastewater treatment plant.

The Times-Mail reports that after interviewing five engineering firms, city officials opted to employ Donohue & Associates, an Indianapolis engineering firm that specializes in water, wastewater and transportation solutions.

Paul Elling, a project engineer for the firm, presented a contract to the Board of Works that includes a complete description of the various units and components the firm will be working on. It includes adding screens at the front end to eliminate plastic and debris, replacing equipment on the primary and secondary clarifiers and adding equipment to the oxidation ditch.

The contract states the city will pay Donohue $279,000 to prepare the project for the bond issue through the bidding phase. Those fees, Elling explained, are the city's responsibility to pay, then it can opt to repay itself through the loan it will secure to fund the work at the plant.

But discussion regarding the wastewater treatment project didn't end with the contract.

Elling explained that some of the work needed at the facility on Meridian Road would be done by the city, beforehand, to save money.

One of those projects is replacing the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system, which is original to the plant.
Two bids were submitted by local companies to replace the furnace and air conditioning units at the facility.

* Edwards Heating & Cooling submitted a bid for $11,901.98.

* Ringer & Daniels submitted a bid for $8,986.50 with an additional $800 tacked on to replace the lines going into the plant.

The board accepted the Ringer & Daniels bid.
