Kristian Simmonds Named New Development Director At Becky's Place

Last updated on Monday, December 9, 2013

(BEDFORD) - Kristina Simmonds, who has a background in grant-writing, communications and event planning, has joined the staff of Becky’s Place as development director.

The job is a new position for the homeless shelter that serves women and children and Simmonds says her focus will be increasing corporate support for Becky's Place so that it is a sustainable shelter.

She said the shelter currently receives about $35,000 from a federal emergency housing grant. The shelter receives support from Catholic Charities and also had two fundraisers this year, a Valentine's Day dinner and an Evening at Otis Park.

She will work with shelter director Corinna Hayes and the Becky's Place advisory council on increasing support for the shelter.

Simmonds says for the shelter to be self-sustaining, it would need about $10,000 to $12,000 a month, which could come from grants , corporate pledges, individual giving and fundraising events.

Simmonds' previous experience has been in the field of education, but she said she was interested in working for Becky's Place because of its approach to helping women.

Simmonds is a graduate of Indiana University and lives in Bloomington. She previously worked for the Heritage Education Foundation in Indianapolis as a teacher liaison and curriculum developer. She recently worked as communications director of Pinnacle School, an independent school in Bloomington that works with students with learning differences.
