Last updated on Tuesday, December 24, 2013

(BLOOMINGTON) - A $429,000 federal grant will allow Indiana University to expand research to detect sports-related concussions to more sports.

IU says that researchers at its School of Optometry received the National Institutes of Health grant to study mild traumatic brain injury in IU and high school athletes. It will fund development of a portable sideline eye tracker that can be used to test eye movements of athletes during competition as a possible indicator for concussions.

Researchers Nicholas Port and Steven Hitzeman began their research four years ago with athletes on the IU men's football and soccer teams and the women's soccer team. The new funding will allow them to expand the research to other sports including men's and women's basketball. They also plan to work with high school programs .
