Grand Marshal Adele Bowden-Purlee Will Kick Off Christmas Parade Saturday

Last updated on Friday, December 6, 2013

(BEDFORD) - Adele Bowden-Purlee, who was born and raised in Bedford, is the grand marshal of the 2013 Festival of Lights parade Saturday in downtown Bedford.

As of now the Christmas parade will still kick off at 6 p.m. Chamber officials say the snow will just make the parade more magical. However if there is major snow accumulation a decision will be made on Saturday as to whether or not the parade will be canceled.

Bowden-Purlee, who was the first female president of the Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce, will have her grandchildren, 8-year-old Quinley Bowden, 5-year-old Kirin Bowden, and Noah Ransom with her during the parade. They are excited they get to flip the switch for the lights on the courthouse.

Bowden-Purlee also is a member of the Bedford City Council, Lawrence County Economic Growth Council and Altrusa Club, but has also been a part of the Bedford Recreation Foundation, redevelopment committee and Rotary Club. She also volunteers to read to students.

The honorary grand marshals are members of the Bedford 13- and 14-year-old All Star State Champions who participated in the Junior League World Series.

The crew at Super Oldies 105.5 WQRK will be announcing the event that will include more then 120 entries.

There are some new things happening this year, including Star TV Station filming the parade and Bedford North Lawrence photography students taking pictures that will be edited and sold at By the Glass Productions.

Smokin' Jim's will bring their train, decorated as the Polar Express, to Wiley House after the parade. Children will be able to get on it, and parents will be able to take photos.

Vendors will also be set up in the downtown area selling their wares.
