Collier Appointed As New North Lawrence School Board Member

Last updated on Monday, December 16, 2013

(BEDFORD) - Lawrence County Circuit Court Judge Andrea McCord has appointed Kristen Collier to the North Lawrence School Board.

Collier will fill the vacancy of Wendell Nikirk, who passed away in October. Her first meeting was Thursday night.

The task of appointing a new board member fell, by statute, to McCord after the remaining six members of the school board reached a stalemate in the effort to name someone to the seat.

The board received applications from eight people who were interested in serving. The school board narrowed the initial field of candidates to three -- Ben Kimmel, Sam Martin and Jamie Nikirk -- on Nov. 7.

The board, in its Nov. 13 session, was divided on whether to appoint Kimmel or Martin to the post. McCord, before making her decision, interviewed prospective appointees.

Also during that meeting the board voted to make up the three missed snow days on Jan. 20, Feb. 17 and April 7.

The school board also considered two options for the 2014-15 school calendar at their meeting Thursday night.

The board had considered two possible calendars for the next academic year with one calling for an Aug. 8 starting date for students and the other calling for students to report on Aug. 12.

According to the Times-Mail, by a 6-1 vote, with Larry Arnold voting in opposition, the board approved the calendar with the earlier starting date.

A slight change from this year's calendar will mean that the first grading period will be completed before the beginning of the Oct. 24-28 fall break. Parent-teacher conferences will take place between the end of the first grading period and the beginning of the break.

This year was the first year for the school to adopt what was called a "modified" school calendar. It required elementary school teachers to have report cards out before the beginning of the fall break.
