Candle Light Event In Honor Of Grieving Parents

Last updated on Thursday, December 5, 2013

(MONTGOMERY) - The local chapter of Compassionate Friends, a group established in 1968 to help those grieving the loss of a child, grandchild or sibling, will be hosting its 6th annual remembrance and candle lighting event Sunday at the Montgomery Ruritan Building.

Cecil Jones who serves as regional coordinator for the group with his wife Mary Rose says between 95 and 100 children are represented in the local chapter and families come from as far as 40 miles away to participate in meetings the second Sunday of each month.

Sunday's event will be held in conjunction with the 17th Worldwide Candle Lighting.

At 7 p.m. Sunday (local time), all the groups participating in the candle lighting event will begin lighting the candles. Each candle represents a child who has passed away.

In addition to the candles, two large screens will project photos of the children who lost their lives.

In addition to the monthly meetings, Jones says the Compassionate Friends take baskets to the funeral homes for the families who have lost a child.

The group also attends conferences and learns how to help others deal with the grief of losing a child.

Jones stressed that the meetings are not religion based but rather based on what has helped the various individuals in the group.

While Compassionate Friends only serves families who have lost children, Jones says his group tries to point others dealing with grief in the right direction.

In addition to the annual candle lighting event, Compassionate Friends hosts a golf scramble each year to benefit the organization.
