(UNDATED) - A winter storm is expected to barrel through central and southern Indiana in two waves, bringing a mixture of sleet and snow to the southern two-thirds of the state through Friday.
A winter weather advisory is in place for most of central Indiana, with a winter storm warning posted for most of southern Indiana.
Much cooler air is beginning to filtering into Indiana, and a low-pressure system sweeping by to the south of the state will bring in more cold air and moisture.
Wintry precipitation is expected to begin falling in Indiana Thursday evening, with a band of sleet and snow moving through the region.
The first wave of precipitation is expected to end early Friday, but will start up again later in the morning.
Accumulation of 2 to 5 inches of snow is expected in the Indianapolis area and in counties along and immediately north and south of Interstate 70.
In areas from Bloomington to Columbus to Greensburg, higher snowfall and sleet totals are expected, with total storm accumulations of 7 to 10 inches possible.
Accumulations in that area will stay lower if more sleet falls initially.
There is another chance for accumulating snow on Sunday with a snow/sleet/rain mix followed by another blast of arctic air next week where we will drop into the single digits according to Meteorologist Todd Klaassen..
In 2011, Indiana lawmakers enacted a law putting the entire state on one system designed by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security on travel advisories.
The new system has three color-coded warning levels each Indiana county can implement when necessary:
Advisory (Yellow) - Routine travel or activities may be restricted in areas because of a hazardous situation. Citizens should use caution or avoid these areas. Schools and businesses may begin to implement their emergency action plans.
Watch (Orange) - Conditions are threatening to the safety of the public. Only essential travel is recommended (i.e., to and from work, emergency situations, etc.). Emergency action plans have been or should now be implemented by businesses, schools, government agencies, and other organizations.
Warning (Red) - Travel may be restricted to emergency personnel only. Citizens are directed to refrain from all travel, comply with necessary officials and disaster services forces in executing emergency operation plans, and comply with the directions or properly identified officers. Further and more specific restrictions may be included in the disaster declaration.
Police do have the authority to ticket motorists who are caught driving during a red warning.
