Woman Arrested After Stealing Checks From Family Member

Last updated on Monday, November 18, 2013

(BLOOMFIELD) - A rural Worthington woman accused of stealing checks from a family member was arrested last weekend on a warrant issued as a result of an investigation by Greene County Sheriff’s Deputy James Carpenter.

The Greene County Daily World reports, 24-year-old Kristie Leigh Burdette was arrested custody and booked into the Greene County Jail Saturday by Deputy Leon Dunigan on a warrant issued on Nov. 8.

Deputy Carpenter first spoke to a man on Oct. 30 who said checks from his and his wife's banking account had been getting cashed by someone else and he suspected Burdette.

He reported five checks were written for cash at a local business and two for merchandise at a store, for a total amount of approximately $700.

He believed the checks had gone missing over the previous month and they had been cashed with the man's forged signature that looked like Burdette's handwriting.

When Carpenter first spoke to Burdette, she allegedly said she had no recollection of taking the checks, did say the writing did look like her handwriting, and she did not know what she purchased.

Carpenter checked surveillance video at one business and reported a video, taken on Oct. 25, shows Burdette in an exchange with a cashier who took the check and handed cash to Burdette.

Carpenter said another video at the same business showed a similar exchange took place on Oct. 26.

Burdette was then interviewed by Carpenter at the sheriff's department, with assistance from GCSD Det. James O'Malley.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Burdette again told the officers she had no recollection of taking the checks or cashing them, admitted that her handwriting was on the checks, said that she could not remember what she spent the money on, and said when she cashed the checks she was under the influence of Xanax which causes her to black out.

Burdette posted bond and was released from jail then appeared in Greene Circuit Court Wednesday morning and was charged with theft, a class D felony.
