Stage To Be Built For Harps Commons, Work Continues On U Street Channel

Last updated on Wednesday, November 20, 2013

(BEDFORD) - The city will be using the former Jenkins building, in the 1500 block of J Street, for storage and plans to add bathrooms and extend a stage from the building for Harp Commons.

City officials will receive plans from Kovert Hawkins Architects next month and renovations should begin at the first of the year. The city received three bids on the project and awarded it to Sanders Services of Bedford.

In other business, the board agreed to a change order in the storm sewer improvements being done on what is known as the "U Street Channel."

Utilities Director Misty Adams told the board the work has made it difficult for large trucks to get into and out of Samco, a business just off U Street near John Williams Boulevard. The change order will provide temporary access during construction, at a price of $34,884.

Adams told the board the work is part of the grant funding.

The city received the grant of up to $1 million from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs to address flooding in three problematic areas:

* An alley between Eastern and Western avenues and 27th and 29th streets.
* The "U Street Channel" near John Williams Boulevard and U Street.
* Lincoln Avenue near Sixth Street.

The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2014.

In September, the board accepted from Tri County Builders' quote of $642,300 to complete the work. It was the lowest of nine bids submitted to the board.
