(DUGGER) - The Sullivan Northeast School Board has postponed a vote on closing two schools in Dugger.
The Sullivan Daily Times reports that the board will instead wait two weeks for a proposal from a newly organized committee, Save UHS, to discuss options for the school and the corporation.
The move followed pleas from Dugger residents to reject a feasibility study's recommendation to close both Dugger Elementary School and Union Junior/Senior High School.
Hundreds of Union High School supporters attended the board meeting at Hymera Elementary School Monday evening. The stands were full of Union students, parents and Dugger residents showing their dedication to the school.
A board presentation referenced a 2012 feasibility study which showed Union Junior/Senior High School functioning at 34.3 percent of its actual capacity. Between this and continued deficits in the school, the study suggested the closing of both schools.
The board cannot take a vote in an executive session and will therefore not be making a decision on corporation reorganization until the next open board meeting.
