(HELMSBURG) - A Mooresville woman died and her boyfriend was injured in a one-car crash just before dawn on Monday.

According to Brown County Chief Deputy Coroner Earl Piper, 25-year-old Meagan Lee Horton died at the scene from multiple blunt force trauma to the head.

According to Brown County Deputy Greg Pittman,Horton was traveling in the 6200 block of Railroad Road in a 2000 Cadillac CTR, when the vehicle left the roadway and slid into a tree damaging the driver's side. A passing motorist noticed the vehicle and called police.

While on the scene, police received a second call reporting that a bloodied man was on the front porch of a home knocking on the door. Horton's boyfriend, 25-year-old Joshua Stine of Mooresville, was looking for help.

He was taken to Johnson Memorial Hospital with unknown injuries.

At the crash scene, officers found Horton trapped under the door and she had no pulse.

A child seat was in the back seat of the vehicle and Pittman and Nashville Officer Josh Stargell searched the area for a child, but found none.

Stine told police that the couple had been drinking in Bloomington. They were on their way back to Mooresville when the crash occurred.

Pittman said alcohol, speed and unfamiliarity with Railroad Road likely contributed to the crash. There were no skid marks leading up to the tree, which was just feet from the roadside.

Piper said he did not believe either occupant was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

A blood sample was taken from Horton for a toxicology screen, which is common practice in a fatal accident.
