Monroe County Airport Main Runway Open

Last updated on Wednesday, November 20, 2013

(BLOOMINGTON) - The Monroe County airport main runway is now open.

The runway has been out of service for nearly two months while employees of Crider & Crider completed the $11 million dollar project.

Payton says the closure caused disruptions for airport users, but also provided officials a chance to resurface the runway.

The sinkholes were filled with concrete soon after they were discovered in 2011. The project involved removing soil to the bedrock and refilling the area with stone and other materials.

A smaller runway remained open during the work.

During runway construction, the airport lost both revenue and business. Companies such as Cook Aviation and Indiana University were forced to fly into the Indianapolis International Airport while repairs were being made.

Monroe County Airport Manager Bruce Payton estimates the airport lost between $15,000 to $20,000.
