Mitchell Cheerleaders Can Now Earn Athletic Letters

Last updated on Wednesday, November 13, 2013

(MITCHELL) - Heidi Myers, who is the mother of a Mitchell seventh-grade cheerleader, went before the school board asking that the policy be changed to allow cheerleaders to earn athletic letters.

Superintendent Steve Phillips advised the board against voting Monday to change the policy. He suggested that protocol would be for Myers to speak with the high school principal and the athletic director, who then could opt to make a recommendation to the board, seeking the policy change.

All board members expressed support for Myers' request, but were divided on when the school board should vote on the matter.

Board member Steve Burton said he didn't favor the board establishing policy based on a single meeting wherein the board was approached with a request.

McKnight asked before making a motion allowing for the change, that the principal, athletic director and cheerleader sponsor could then determine the specifics required for a cheerleader to earn a letter.

The vote carried 3-2, with Burton and Redman voting against it.

Both members who voted against the measure stressed that they were not against the request.

Burton said he thought administrators should have been consulted "out of professional courtesy" before a vote was taken.
