(UNDATED) - The Internal Revenue Service is warning the public about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers across the country.
Potential victims get a call from someone claiming to be an IRS agent who says you owe money to the IRS and it has to be paid through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer.
If you don't cooperate, they'll threaten to arrest you or suspend your business or driver's license.
The IRS says the scammers are able to spoof the IRS toll free number on caller ID and in some cases, they may know the last four digits of your Social Security Number.
In some cases, the scammers will call back pretending to be from the police or DMV.
If you become a target of the scam, the IRS says you should call the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1-800-366-4484.
