(GREENE CO.) - Greene County police officers and officials in the prosecutor’s office have tossed their razors and shaving items aside during November to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
Linton Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 105 President Paul Clark says officers from the Linton, Jasonville, Lyons and Worthington Police Departments along with the Greene County Prosecutor's office are participating in No-Shave November.
No-Shave November is a unique way to raise awareness of cancers that men face. It's a time to embrace hair, something that many cancer patients lose during treatment. The ACS suggests donating the money you would spend on shaving and grooming items during the month.
Clark says officers chose to pay $1 a day not to shave. If an officer chooses to shave during the month, a shaving permit can be purchased for $45. The shaving permit gives the officer the opportunity to shave as often as he wants.
Clark says they are not asking for money from the public, it was just something fun officers could do to help. But no donations will be turned away.
It's a treat for officers to have the opportunity to forego shaving as local police departments have strict grooming policies.
For the month of November, it's important for members of the public to know that those policies are null and void. Clark says if residents see a "shaggy looking officer" they should know it's for a good cause.
Of the cancers affecting men, prostate is the most common, after skin cancer. More than two million men in the United States are survivors of prostate cancer.
