(BROWN CO.) - Gov. Mike Pence will visit Brown County on Veterans Day to dedicate a bridge in memory of a local soldier killed in Afghanistan more than three years ago.
On Feb. 18, 2010, an improvised explosive device fatally injured Marine Sgt. Jeremy McQueary two months before he was expected to return to his Brown County home. He was 27, and left behind a wife and infant son.
At the request of McQueary's family, the governor will memorialize the bridge over Salt Creek between Snyder and Parkview roads on State Road 46 East. A sign bearing McQueary's name will adorn both sides of the bridge for eastbound and westbound traffic to see.
A ceremony in his honor will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11 in Brown County State Park near the swimming pool just inside the north gate entrance. The public is encouraged to come.
McQueary's family is expected to attend, as is an array of veterans and state and local dignitaries.
Brown County Veterans Affairs and the Brown County Sheriff's Office will assist, along with an honor guard and the National Guard, which will help transport people in vans to and from their parking spaces.
The ceremony will include a 21-shot volley, a bugler playing Taps and a bagpiper playing the Marines' hymn. Pence will speak about the sacrifices made by McQueary, who not only served in Afghanistan, but also completed two tours in Iraq.
