Funnel Cloud Spotted Near Huron

Last updated on Monday, November 18, 2013

(BEDFORD) - Lawrence Police officers reported a tornado west of Bedford, in the area of U.S. 50 and Huron near the county line between Lawrence and Martin counties, according to Valerie Luchauer, Lawrence County Emergency Management director.

First responders dealt with felled trees and electrical lines in the counties and communities surrounding Bedford and Bloomington Sunday afternoon.

Duke Energy reported power outages throughout the region, and several homes and structures suffered damage related to falling trees. Duke Energy says there were 1,730 power outages in Monroe County at 6 p.m. That fell to 1,073 by 11:15 p.m.

Two Indiana State troopers and the National Weather Service noted a "large and extremely dangerous" tornado 8 miles west of Bedford at 3:51 p.m.

The tornado must have formed in a rural area without residents, Luchauer said. No one had reported damage or injuries from it Sunday night.

"There was apparently some miscommunication that came out that a trailer was hit by the county line," she said. "But it's our understanding that was a misunderstanding."

Other Lawrence County damage included a tree falling on a residence on Art Gallery Road between Bedford and Mitchell and a tree damaging two homes on L Street on the north side of Bedford, Luchauer said.

Storms blew over a barn on the eastern side of the county and winds reportedly blew a minivan off the road in the Springville area as well, but no injuries were reported in any of the incidents, she added.

The Herald Times reports, members of the Bloomington Fire Department responded to a storm-related call at 1909 E. Windsor Drive, according to Sgt. Kyle Mundy. A tree fell and broke wires running to a home, causing a power surge that burned out wiring, he said.

A vehicle crash occurred in the 8700 block of Old State Road 37 at the time the first wave of storms hit, according to Perry Clear-Creek Fire Chief Joe McWhorter. A driver lost control of his vehicle, went over a hill and hit some trees, he said.

Firefighters had to extricate the driver from his vehicle, and he was taken to the hospital with what McWhorter said were not life threatening injuries at the time. McWhorter did not have a name or age of the driver or an official cause of the crash.
