(UNDATED) - The Department of Natural Resources wants to clear up confusion over what can and cannot be used when it comes to scents and bait during deer season.
Some hunters wonder why deer attractants can be sold at retail stores, but at the same time are illegal to be used by hunters.
Lt. Bill Browne with DNR Law Enforcement says it's because those attractants can be used to lure deer if you plan on simply watching or recording them.
"What you cannot do is bait for deer, which baiting means anything - you can't carry anything in and place it on the ground - that the deer will eat or lick," Browne said.
The baiting ban, the ban on using commercial products like Deer Co-Cain and Buck Jam, only applies to hunting. "If you own a property and you just want to videotape deer and stuff like that out. So it's legal to sell, legal to put out, but you may not hunt over it," Browne said.
Scents - typically used to cover up human scent in the wild - are okay for hunters to use; scents alone are not consider baiting. "Use all the sprays you want to, just do put anything out for the deer to eat or lick when you are hunting," Browne said.
Bow-hunting season for deer is already underway and runs through January 5. Firearms season for deer runs from November 16 through December 1, and hunting with the use of muzzleloaders is allowed from December 7-22.
A special antlerless season to help control the deer population runs from December 26 through January 5.
