(BEDFORD) - Bedford city officials plan to pay off a loan used to purchase the blue trash totes and the automated trash truck saving the city more than $7,000 in interest.

The Times-Mail reports, the money saved will be used to buy more needed equipment to help with picking up brush.

The Bedford City Council voted to take $203,003 from the Rainy Day Fund and $23,000 from the Sanitation fund to pay off the $569,153 loan.

According to Utilities Director Misty Adams told the council she would like to buy a truck to help crews clean up brush piles left at curbs by residents. The truck will be equipped with a claw that will reach down and pick up the brush. Adams says the truck is more than convenient, it will also prevent injuries. So far this year two people have suffered injuries while picking up brush.

Mayor Shawna Girgis says the truck will also make the job go quicker, making the service more responsive to residents
