(ORLEANS) - A recent study by the Hoosier Hills Food Bank, a group serving Brown, Lawrence, Martin, Monroe, Orange and Owen counties, showed that one in four children younger than 18 are at risk for hunger.
Orange County has 30 percent of their children who are food insecure. Bulldog Backpacks will address the needs of students who are at risk of hunger in kindergarten through sixth grade at Orleans Elementary School.
Officials will be focusing on the students meeting the Federal Guidelines for free or reduced school meals. There are approximately 200 student who met those guidelines at the elementary school. The parents of these children will be contacted and must opt-in which will allow the children to bring home food.
The group is looking for donations and sponsors to support Bulldog Backpacks.
All donations received will be used to purchase food items for students. Any contribution will help. The initial goal is to raise $10,000.
All donations are tax deductible.
