(HAMBLEN TWP.) - A Brown County woman remains in an Indianapolis hospital with serious injuries after slamming her car into a tree Friday.
According to the Brown County Democrat, an IU Health Methodist Hospital spokesperson reported 41-year-old Sue Ann Winn was in critical condition Friday.
Winn was flown by a medical helicopter to the hospital following the crash at 3:29 a.m. on Sweetwater Trail.
According to an Indiana Police report, officers were called to Sweetwater Trial after Brown County Sgt. Mike Moore told radioed dispatch saying he narrowly avoided a collision with a car off Sweetwater Trail.
ISP Trooper Justin Bulter investigated.
According to police, Winn was traveling south in the 6900 block of Sweetwater Trail in a 1993 Ford Mustang and when she crested a hill in the center of the road she meet Moore's northbound police cruiser.
Winn swerved to the right to avoid a collision and then over-corrected, which caused the Mustang to leave the east side of the road and crash head-on into a tree.
Initially, Moore thought the driver may have fled because he could not find anyone inside the vehicle. The vehicle then erupted in fire. Sgt. Moore emptied his fire extinguisher onto the flames, but it did not put out the fire.
Four minutes after reporting the crash, the officer notified dispatch that he had found a woman he suspected had been ejected from the car.
Hamblen Fire Chief Arlan Pierce says emergency personnel had to quickly move Winn from the front of the car before firefighters could fight the fire in the engine compartment. Within two minutes of moving Winn on a backboard, firefighters had the fire out.
A LifeLine Helicopter landed at the fire station and flew Winn to IU Methodist Hospital's Neuro Critical Care Unit.
Rita Haines, Winn's former mother-in-law and her emergency contact, reported that Winn suffered serious brain, heart and knee injuries.
Police secured a warrant for a blood draw from Winn. Brown County Prosecutor Jim Oliver says the sample was sent to the Indiana Department of Toxicology for testing and those results are pending.
