(BEDFORD) - Bertha’s Mission, a community kitchen, opened its doors at 1008 Fifth Street in September.
The former Chuck's Soul Food, which was owned by Bertha Sterling, is run by her daughter Janice Nickeo, family, volunteers and the Limestone Ladle, which also serves community meals two Sundays a month. Bertha Sterling passed away in 2012.
Meals are served for free to anyone who comes in.
In seven weeks the kitchen has become a popular place.
"We started out serving 10, 14 to 18 people a day," says volunteer for the Tabernacle of Praise Church Boomer Christy. "Now we sever on average 72 people a day. Some days we serve 30 to 40 and others more than 100 meals."
Bertha's Mission serves meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and runs on donations.
"God blesses us with donations of food and finances, it is our intent to be open every day as well as special occasions," Christy says.
Bertha's Mission Thanksgiving Banquet will be the Saturday before Thanksgiving on November 23 from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the Family Life Center at the First Baptist Church on Washington Avenue.
"This banquet will be to bless those that might not have a Thanksgiving feast at their home," Christy says.
And it will be a feast with turkey, ham, dressing, potatoes, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, salads, homemade desserts and beverages.
