A Bedford Woman Suffered Serious Injuries After Being Hit On Ind. 37

(MITCHELL) - A Bedford woman suffered serious injuries after she was hit by a vehicle while walking across Ind. 37 near Kentucky Fried Chicken Wednesday night.

According to a Mitchell Police report, when police arrived on the scene at 8:35 p.m. they found 56-year-old Benita Stahl laying in the middle of both the southbound lanes of Ind. 37 and Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department first responders were providing her aid.

The officer says Stahl, of 90 Davis Drive, was bleeding from her head and he detected the of alcohol on her breath.

Stahl was in extreme pain and also suffered a possible broken leg or ankle.

The driver of the vehicle, 38-year-old Derik Belcher, of 2540 Rabbitsville Rd., told police he traveling south on Ind. 37 on his way to Mitchell Manor when he noticed a person in the middle of the highway in the turning lanes. The woman ran across both lanes of travel and she then either started back across the highway or lost her balance and he hit her with the passenger side mirror of his 2005 Dodge Ram pickup.

Witnesses to the accident also told police the woman had ran across Ind. 37 and then either started back into traffic or stumbled and that is when she was hit by the truck.

Stahl was transported to IU Health Hospital and then flown to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

According to the police report, the doctor told police Stahl suffered two broken legs and had a laceration on her head that exposed the skull.

Both Stahl and Belcher agreed to have a blood-alcohol test and those results are pending.
