(LINTON) - 9-year-old David Wheelock of Linton recently broke two national records in muzzleloading rifle shooting.

The Greene County Daily World reports, David broke his previously set record in the 50-2X by shooting a 50-3X out of a possible 50-5X.

Competing in the Sub-Junior category for competitors under the age of 12, David also broke a record for the age group championship by shooting a 144-4X, beating the previous record by two points.

In each competition the targets were shot at 25 yards from a standing rest and 50 yards off of a bench.

In many muzzle loading competitions you may see full size rifles and massive bench rifles, but David uses a .32 caliber rifle built by his father Bill Wheelock.

David has been shooting since he was three or four. In fact, shooting kind of runs in the family.

Bill he got into muzzle loading rifle shooting about 25 years ago and is now a field representative for the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association located in Friendship, Ind. He enjoys teaching David tricks of the trade and sharing his passion.

Bill said most of the records in David's age group are set by the older end of the group, not by someone who still has two years left in the category.

Bill says the events are also diverse with activities in target shooting, reenactments, pistol shooting and tomahawk throwing.

Even though there are times when David says he would rather be riding his bike, he said he enjoys shooting at competitions and is looking forward to next year's competition.
