United Way Looking For New Workplace Donor Groups

Last updated on Monday, October 7, 2013

(BEDFORD) - Executive Director Lorri Hamer and campaign Chairman Tom Bishop are in hopes of reaching this year’s United Way campaign goal of $202,014.

Last year, according to Hamer, the group reached about 95 percent of the goal.

United Way of South Central Indiana funds 11 nonprofit agencies: American Red Cross, Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County, Community Health & Wellness Center/WIC, Hoosier Hills PACT, Boy Scouts, Lawrence InterFaith Endeavor, Salvation Army, Mitchell Senior Citizens, Options, Paoli Senior Citizens and Lawrence County Senior Citizens.

Services provided by those agencies include domestic violence intervention, after-school care and homework help, low-cost health care, emergency food and shelter, youth leadership training and activities for older people and those with disabilities.

Payroll deduction provides a continuous funding stream that allows the agencies to plan a budget and also to concentrate on programs and services.

Workplace campaigns will be taking place over the next few months as companies engage employees as to why it's important to support United Way. Some will have contests and prize giveaways.

Hamer and Bishop plan to visit many of those campaigns to answer questions about the agencies.

For decades, General Motors has provided the bulk of United Way funding.

Hamer she hopes to bring new donor groups on board this year.
