(BEDFORD) - Bedford Police officers arrested two Kentucky residents after they attempted to steal items from WalMart and then fled the store.
According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley officers were contacted at 3:24 p.m. after the WalMart lost prevention team contacted police saying they had a couple detained for shoplifting.
But before officers could arrive the couple ran from the store and fled the area in a white Mercury SUV.
"Officers spotted the vehicle at John Williams Boulevard and X Street," Parsley says. "But they refused to stop and lead police on a pursuit through several side streets then back to Ind. 37."
Along the way the male was throwing paper items out of the vehicle.
The pursuit continued north on Ind. 37 to the Oolitic stoplight where the vehicle ran the light and turned left onto Patton Hill Road. The driver then turned onto Vista Drive, which is a dead end street.
"Officers were able to take the couple into custody without incident," Parsley says.
Police arrested 53-year-old Perri Jackson, of Owensboro, KY. He was issued three citation for disregarding a stop sign, two citations for disregarding an automatic signal, reckless driving, reckless driving causing property damage, improper passing on the right, littering, theft, resisting arrests, reckless driving at a high or low speed, criminal recklessness, wanted on warrants out of Hardin County KY. and Harrison County, IN.
56-year-old Teresa Jackson,of Owensboro KY., was arrested on warrants on four counts of attempting to obtain a legend drug and theft in Kentucky and theft.
"It was determined those paper items thrown from the vehicle were receipts the couple were using to fraudulently claim refunds from WalMart stores," Parsley says. "Hence the littering charge."
Parsley says that is not an uncommon crime.
"They make a circuit of it," he added. "They make a living by going from store to store, claiming they purchased items and then want cash refunds."
