Salem And West Washington Football Teams Gear Up To Battle Cancer

Last updated on Wednesday, October 9, 2013

(SALEM) - For the Salem and West Washington football fans, it doesn’t seem to matter what team they’re rooting for when it comes to fighting cancer.

The schools are selling Salem- and West Washington-themed T-shirts in memory of Melissa Badger, mother of senior Collin Badger, who lost her short fight with cancer this past summer.

The T-shirts, emblazoned with "Lion Pride, Badger Spirit" or "Senator Pride, Badger Spirit," depending on the school, cost $12 for sizes up to XL and $15 for XXL. Order forms for Salem T-shirts are available through the Salem High School office, and the water department office at city hall and West Washington order forms are available at the school offices, Campbellsburg Floral & Gifts, the water department and QuickLane in Salem.

Savannah Hartsfield, wife of Salem football Coach RJ Hartsfield. hopes to have order forms out at the football games leading up to the Cancer Awareness Game on Oct. 18 at Salem, when fans are encouraged to wear their Badger Spirit shirts. Order forms must be turned in by Oct. 11.

A portion of the funds raised will pay for the T-shirts and the rest will go toward Relay For Life. So far, more than 400 Lion Pride shirts have been sold.

Regardless of how many shirts are purchased or which team wins the game, everyone involved hopes their efforts honor the memory of Melissa Badger.
