(MITCHELL) - A new 165-foot cell phone town will not be erected in downtown Mitchell anytime soon.
Steve Qualley, who selects sites for placement of cell phone tower for Verizon asked the city's permission to place the cell tower on city-owned land at Seventh Street and Mississippi Avenue.
Verizon proposed a 30-year lease with the municipality that would pay $900 a month. Every five years, the payment would increase 10 percent.
In exchange for those payments, the company would need a fenced-in 70-foot by 70-foot area that would encase a pre-fabricated building to house radio equipment and a back-up generator and a 165-foot tall tower with antennas.
But once Mitchell residents heard about the place they voiced their oppositions to Mayor Gary Pruett.
Mayor Pruitt notified Qualley the company would have to find a different location to place the tower.
