Monroe County Airport's Main Runway To Open November 20

Last updated on Thursday, October 31, 2013

(BLOOMINGTON) - Officials at Crider & Crider says as long as the weather cooperates, work on the main runway at the Monroe County Airport should be completed by November 20.

The main runway was closed so that crews could make long-term repairs for sinkholes near it.

Monroe County Airport manager Bruce Payton says the $11 million project closed the runway for about two months.

Payton says the closure caused disruptions for airport users, but also provided officials a chance to resurface the runway.

The sinkholes were filled with concrete soon after they were discovered in 2011. The project involved removing soil to the bedrock and refilling the area with stone and other materials. A smaller runway remained open during the work.
