(MARTINSVILLE) - Dr. Ron Furniss, superintendent of the Metropolitan School District of Martinsville, took an unexpected sick leave 24 hours after the second of two school board executive sessions called to investigate allegations of “individual misconduct,” and “job performance evaluations of individual employees.”
There is no indication which employee or employees the board was investigating.
School Board President Steve Brock says the board had an issue that was of concern and is investigating that concern, but at this time has been unfounded.
Furniss' decision to take sick leave of an undetermined length of time was a surprise to the board and Assistant Superintendent Randy Taylor.
Furniss' last day to work in his office was October 3. Taylor says Furniss has been in and out of the office, but can't say what if anything was removed.
Furniss was at luncheon honoring a departing employee for a short time Tuesday afternoon.
School board officials were not aware of Furniss suffering any physical illness.
Brock says the board still has confidence in Furniss as superintendent.
Furniss' contract pays him $123,000 a year and will expire at the end of 2017. He did announce he would retire in June 2014.
The board has begun the process to find a new superintendent.
Brock says until Furniss comes back to work, or another superintendent is hired, assistant superintendents Randy Taylor and Dr. Jerry Sanders will oversee operations of the district.
