(MARTINSVILLE) - A Martinsville man with a history of arguments with his son was being held in jail on suspicion of fatally shooting the younger man, the sheriff said.

David Carrender, 49, admitted killing 19-year-old Wyatt Carrender on Sunday evening inside the older man's rural Morgan County home, Sheriff Robert Downey says.

The Carrenders had been out watching football games together when they started arguing over whether to return home, Downey said. Once home, the arguing continued.

"It appears the father retrieved a handgun and shot his son, it appears, six times," Downey says.

David Carrender is believed to have been drinking, Downey says. The two men's girlfriends were present at the time.

Neighbors heard the gunfire.

"I heard a series of four to five gunshots real quick," says Tony White, who lives across the street from Carrender. "I heard what I assumed was the young boy's girlfriend scream. She was asking him (the father) why he had done it. She was just in terrible shape."

White says his wife witnessed a similar argument over the summer.

"They got out in the yard and got to fighting, screaming. Someone was yelling, 'Put the gun away, put the gun away.' Nothing really happened after that incident. That blew over," he added.

Downey says investigators are looking into previous incidents where officers were called to the home.

David Carrender faced a preliminary charge of murder until prosecutors formally file charges in court, likely on Tuesday, Downey says. He was being held without bond Monday. It wasn't clear if he had an attorney.
